Head Coach John Desko
In his first 10 years as head men’s lacrosse coach at Syracuse University, John Desko has blazed a trail of excellence that speaks for itself and distinguishes him as one of the most-respected coaches in the nation and the world. Since replacing Hall of Fame coach Roy Simmons Jr. in 1999, Desko has kept the Orange in the hunt for an NCAA title each and every year and he has brought home the national championship trophy four times (2000, 2002,2004,2008). Since he took over in 1999, Syracuse is 43-25 against top-10 teams, including a 5-1 record in 2008.
Roy Simmons III took over as Syracuse’s offensive coordinator in 2008 and immediately put his stamp on the unit. He crafted the nation’s second-highest scoring offense (13.6 goals per game) to help the Orange win its 10th NCAA title.
For Simmons, it was his seventh championship as a member of the Orange coaching staff.
Under Simmons, the Orange scored at least 10 goals in 16 of its 18 games in 2008, including two 20-goal performances. The squad put up 245 goals and boasted seven 20-goal scorers, the most for an SU squad since 1985.
Simmons coached 10 defensive All-Americans from 1999-07, including Marshall Abrams, John Glatzel, Josh Ruhle, Joe Ceglia, Rob Mulligan, Billy St. George, Solomon Bliss, Scott Ditzell, Jay Pfeifer, and Steve Panarelli.
DaRin is the assistant coach for men’s lacrosse at Limestone College. He is the former Syracuse University goalie coach and defensive assistant. DaRin also has coaching experience as the head assistant men’s lacrosse coach at Oswego State University and Oneonta State College in New York. He began his coaching career at Onondaga Community College where he founded the school's highly successful lacrossse program and was head coach from 2000-2001
Mike MacDonald, SU Attack
Mike is a former SU attack player, graduating in 2008. A high school All-American, MacDonald played in
8 games as a freshman at SU, and 10 as a sophomore, scoring a goal as a freshman in the first round of the NCAA Tournament versus Albany. In his senior year, he saw action in 10 games, with assists against Villanova and Binghamton, and a season-best 3 ground balls against the Wildcats. In his junior year, MacDonald played in nine games on attack, and finished with six goals and two assists, had a personal-high four goals against Rutgers, and had goals against Albany and Colgate.
Kirk Pratt, SU Midfield Face-Off Specialist 1987-1990
Kirk Pratt is a Cobb County Georgia varsity community lacrosse coach at Hillgrove High School. He is a three-time NCAA champion, playing for Syracuse on what has been called “The greatest team in the history of lacrosse” which won its third-straight championship in 1990, and four between 1983 and 1990. In 1990, the top-seeded Orange completed a perfect 13-0 season by crushing Brown, North Carolina and Loyola in the postseason by a combined score of 62-31. In the quarterfinals at the Carrier Dome, SU defeated ninth-seeded Brown 20-12, behind Gary Gait’s five goals and four assists, and three goals each by Paul Gait and Tom Marechek. Matt Palumb had 16 saves in goal, sending SU to the championships at Rutgers. In the semifinals, the Orange jumped out to a 13-3 halftime lead and cruised to a 21-10 win over fourth-seeded Carolina. Gary Gait scored five goals while Greg Burns and Marechek added four each. Palumb matched his career high with 22 saves. Third-seeded Loyola, an overtime winner over Yale in the other semifinal, earned the right to meet the Orange. The Greyhounds hung with the Orange a little longer, but the results were virtually the same — SU, 21-9. The 21 goals and 12-goal margin of victory were championship game records. Gary Gait scored five goals for the third straight game to break his own NCAA playoff record with 15 goals and earn MVP honors. Burns also had five goals, while Marechek and Paul Gait added three goals each, along with five and three assists, respectively. The unsung hero for the Orange was faceoff man Kirk Pratt, who won 17 of his 23 face-offs to help SU to an overall 25-8 advantage.
